Gavilan College employee of 42 years celebrates retirement

Hollister resident Natalie Miranda Juarez, a familiar face at Gavilan College, is celebrating her retirement following a 42-year career at the college. She started working while still a Gavilan College student and in the intervening decades has worked in several different departments—most recently at the college’s satellite site in Hollister’s Briggs Building.

Students hear stories of struggles, perseverance

As students in Linda Pope’s fourth-grade class watched a slideshow about the American Civil Rights Movement, the historical images—some inspiring and others disturbing—included a clip featuring American folk singer and activist Pete Seeger signing the Baptist hymn “We Shall Overcome.” As the students listened, they spontaneously began joining in, singing along aloud—apparently inspired by the raw emotion of the voices that filled their classroom.
