Mail backlog?

“I’m a reader of your column and I find it informative and very entertaining. Thank you for all your useful information. My question is about the post office and mail. Is it possible for the post office to have a backlog of mail? I have a monthly magazine subscription and rental of DVDs by mail. I didn’t receive these as expected in January so I called and asked to have them resent to me. I received the new ones before the old ones. One of the DVDs was postmarked Dec. 22 and I received it Jan. 18. This was mailed from Utah. Does the post office have a backlog of mail they haven’t delivered to us? And should I file a complaint with the United State Postal Service? Thank you.”

Red Phone:

Hmmm. Maybe it’s wrong, but Red Phone doesn’t think it should take 27 full days for mail from Utah to arrive. So it got in touch with postal officials.

The U.S. Postal Service does not keep a backlog of mail, according to Gus Ruiz, Bay Valley District spokesperson for the USPS.

“They deliver the mail as soon as they get it,” he said. “This could be an anomaly. You might have a transportation glitch somewhere, either on the originating end or here.”

He explained that mail from Utah would arrive by air at processing plants in San Jose and Oakland, where it would then be routed to distribution centers and to individual post offices via ground transportation.

“That’s the process from slot to slot, as we call it,” Ruiz said, noting that “we do deliver a lot of mail. Forty-six percent of the world’s volume is handled by the U.S. postal system. In our Bay Valley District alone, on a daily basis , we’re processing between 14 million and 15 million pieces of mail.”

But he added: “If the problem occurs again, I encourage the person to call the postmaster and we’ll look into it.”

Caller, should you ever need to contact Gilroy Postmaster Penny Yates, you can reach her at 842-1354.

Stoplight woes

“I need to complain about the stoplight at Farrell Avenue and Monterey Road. Since they’ve been working on the road in front of the pizza place and the liquor store, the light going off of Farrell onto Monterey takes about two minutes and it’s very disheartening. There will be no traffic on Monterey and you’re just sitting on Farrell waiting to go. I just need to complain about that. Other than that, I love Gilroy.”

Red Phone:

Join the club, caller!

As far as the light is concerned, Red Phone touched base with Gilroy Engineer Don Dey, who said the disruption to the traffic signal was caused by the road and utility construction in the area. The construction work cut the traffic sensors, resulting in the signals being placed on recall. According to Dey, when traffic signals are on recall, the signal timing must be set to a fixed amount of green time whether cars are present or not. The roadway construction work is now complete, the traffic sensors have been installed and the traffic signals should be back to normal operation shortly, he said.

Good job!

“I just want to thank the Dispatch for some great articles on the Gilroy wrestling team this year. I’d also like to say to John Coscia that the article you wrote on myself and my son, Armando Jr., was just a very touching and heartfelt article and I just wanted to thank him for that. Great job, Dispatch. Keep up the good work. Thank you.”

Red Phone:

Thanks for the kudos. The Red Phone passed your call along to Coscia and the sports department to let them know of your appreciation. It gladly accepts all calls – though keep in mind, all you sports fans out there, that the Red Phone isn’t all that sports-minded. But note that it does have a partner in crime: the Green Phone. For all your sports comments and inquiries, call the Green Phone at 842-9069 and give it a piece of your mind.
