Dear Editor:

JEERS to The Dispatch for its unfair characterization of those of us in the Northwest Quad and for your inaccurate statement of the facts regarding our objections to a community center being built in a residential neighborhood.

We welcome a community/recreation center, but some of us believe that the site the city has chosen is wrong. The increased traffic winding through small, residential streets is dangerous. We also voiced our dismay that when we purchased our homes many years ago we were told by the city that the site would one day become a “neighborhood” park.

After waiting 10 years for the park to be built, we find that the plan has recently changed and will now become a “destination” park with community activities planned from morning to night.

We love the people of Gilroy, we love the community. That’s why we live here. Contrary to your statement in the Cheers/Jeers section of Friday’s paper, that we want to separate ourselves from the community, we are trying to improve our community by making sure that the Northwest community center is in a safe location.

The Dispatch is inventing the impression that those of us in the Northwest Quad have a “separatist attitude” and are “new residents” to Gilroy and that we are failing “to become a part of the community.” Give me a break. It’s that kind of reporting that creates a divide in a community. Shame on you.
