One person was airlifted to a San Jose hospital with major injuries following an early morning, head-on traffic collision between neighbors on Summit Road near Mt. Madonna Park west of Gilroy, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred around 7:19 a.m. on a private, dirt road, and emergency crews initially may have had trouble finding the collision because of its remote location, CHP Officer Tiffany Lopez said.

An occupant in one of the vehicles used OnStar, a communications, security and navigation feature, to report the accident and its approximate location, Lopez said.

The drivers of the two vehicles were a 29-year-old male and a 33-year-old male, according to the CHP. The 33-year-old man suffered head injuries and a possible broken arm. He was transported to Valley Medical Center in San Jose, according to the CHP.

A dog riding in one of the vehicles also reportedly died, Lopez said.

She said the road was “fairly narrow,” and the drivers were likely traveling between 30 and 40 miles per hour.
