Four school board incumbents up for reelection, two filed
Gilroy – Four school board candidates may find themselves in an uncontested race if no additional local files papers by Friday.

Four seats on the Gilroy Unified School District board are up for grabs and so far only two incumbents and two newcomers have thrown their names in the pool. Incumbents Tom Bundros and Javier Aguirre and new candidates Denise Apuzzo and Ardy Ghoreishi have all filed for the November election.

The deadline is Friday at 5pm. In July, incumbent David McRae, who served one term on the board, announced that he will not seek reelection. But Jim Rogers, the fourth incumbent, was still weighing the pros and cons of running once again, having served on the board for eight years. As of Monday Rogers had not dropped off the necessary papers at the registrar’s office and is on vacation until next week and unavailable for comment.

Aguirre was appointed in December to serve the remainder of the late TJ Owens’ term. The Gilroy native serves as senior policy aide for Santa Clara County Supervisor Blanca Alvarado and has one young child.

Apuzzo, a Gilroy Realtor, has three children enrolled in Gilroy schools, including the high school and Brownell Middle School. She attends board meetings regularly and stays abreast of school district issues.

Tom Bundros, the father of six children ranging in age from 39 to 18, is finishing up the final year of his first term. He’s a software engineer for Hitachi in San Jose.

Ardy Ghoreishi is a father and volunteers for various district committees including the Christopher High School Steering Committee.
