Actress Rosalind Farotte, right, stars in the Limelight Actors Theater production of ‘Other Desert Cities’ through Sept. 26 at Gilroy Center for the Arts.

Kevin Heath and the Limelight Actors Theater continually bring well done, enjoyable theater to Gilroy. “Other Desert Cities” is a comedy-drama and not an easy piece to deliver, yet Heath and his company of top Limelight alumni actors bring in a first-class production.
When playwright Jon Robin Baitz, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, put pen to paper (or fingers to PC) to write “Other Desert Cities,” he was either in a split-personality mode or solving a Rubik’s cube puzzle or both, simultaneously. His play is about a dysfunctional family with creative, fragile backgrounds that hold a secret that could break the delicate hold that at times keeps the family together.
Baitz succeeds in bringing us a gripping, thoughtful and, at times, humorous and interesting story with a twist. The play’s title is taken from a sign on Highway 10 that directs motorists to turn to Palm Springs or continue straight ahead to “Other Desert Cities.”
Kevin Heath directs with determined force as he leads a group of talented actors through a story that jumps from a family that seemingly has it all to an unwanted visit to the past. In lesser hands, this could have been a confusing mess.
There aren’t any weak players in this offering. Everyone is sharp and comfortable and delivers solid performances. The fine cast includes Denee Lewis-Bohnsack, Rosalind Farotte, John Varela, Anthony Andrade, Jr. and Betsy Andrade. They each bring a special depth and emotion to their complicated roles.
It all takes place in one attractive set designed by Kevin Heath, with excellent lighting by CJ Wallace.
