Dear Editor,
In regards to Tom Mulhern’s column in the Gilroy Dispatch about pensions: I understand what you are saying about the firefighter and police pensions being out of control and comparing them to “regular” jobs.
Where you crossed the line was the idiotic snipe at the armed forces, under the guise of out-of-control spending. In your lame attempt to make a point, you obscure the boundaries of local government spending and federal spending in a couple of lazy strokes of the keyboard.
Anybody who has had the guts to join the military in the first place can see that your head is firmly inserted in your posterior. I could go on about the long hours, the fact that one becomes “government property” after signing the contract, or what percentage of enlisties are actually willing to endure 20 years of “service” as compared to police or firefighters reaching their retirement eligibility age, but I won’t. Ever stop to wonder why it’s only 20 years? I thought not.
Just put the yellow ribbon on your vehicle and fake your support of the military, like most Californians.
Semper Fi!
