CHEERS for our District One representative, Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, the only supervisor to vote against the overly intrusive plastic bag ban. It’s one of those “feel good” votes with little basis in reality. Plastic bags are recyclable and produce a miniscule amount of trash. Plus, the same ordinance specifies a 15-cent charge for paper bags. Way over the top.
JEERS for Gov. Jerry Brown who has shown little capacity to lead the state out of the budget crisis, choosing instead to play up the paralyzing politics of the day. Prison guards get the raises and benefits while teachers are being fired right and left. Brown needs to quit playing the game and come up with some dramatic reform measures that don’t rely on tax extensions or new taxes. If there’s a clear shift in his leadership priorities, he might muster support for compromise proposals.
JEERS for the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office which continues to take forever to make a prosecutorial decision on the MACSA misuse of retirement funds case. Under newly elected DA Jeff Rosen a change seemed to be forthcoming, but that simply hasn’t been the case.

CHEERS for the news that the Gilroy Foundation’s endowment has grown to $8 million. Now that’s a whole bunch of generous people giving back to this community. Every year now, $350,000 in grants will be injected into our community.
