Over the past week, police responded to hit-and-runs, burglaries, domestic incidents, and even an elderly man who was conned by strangers at Walmart. Here are some standout incidents.
In broad daylight on April 6 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., a burglar allegedly broke into a residence on Murray Avenue and stole items including several gold necklaces, gold earrings, gold rings, gold bracelets and two Mexican passports, an estimated value of $7,000. Police have no leads that would identify suspects, said Gilroy Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao.
Two male suspects approached an elderly man in the automotive section of Walmart on Camino Arroyo and convinced him to join in on a gambling game with coins on April 6 at 2:15 p.m. The man bet $300 on the game, and handed it to one of the suspects to hold. The subjects ran off with the man’s money without playing the game.
On April 6 at 10:06 p.m., police entered a home on the 7400 block of Forest Street for a parole check-up. The parolee was not home, however police did find another man in the house who was displaying obvious symptoms of being under the influence of narcotics. Daniel Armas Juarez, 49, was allegedly under the influence of both opiates and a central nervous stimulant. Juarez was arrested and taken to Santa Clara County jail but has since been released.
On April 7 at 12:11 p.m., Ronnie Lujan, 29, was driving a gold Chrysler when he failed to stop at a stop sign on Wren Avenue and Mantelli Drive. When an officer attempted to pull the suspect over, he fled in his vehicle to Howard Avenue, where he jumped out of his moving vehicle and ran. He gave up shortly after beginning to run. Police say Lujan was found in possession of 16.58 grams of methamphetamines for sale and a digital scale. He was arrested for abating the pursuit, parole violation and possession of methamphetamines.
A 40-year old Gilroy resident allegedly grabbed her mother-in-law, a 63-year-old Gilroy resident, by the throat during an argument that turned violent on the 8100 block of Westwood Drive on April 8 at 3 p.m. The District Attorney will review the case and decide if charges are appropriate, Gallacinao said.
Gilroy resident Rafael Zavaleta, 40, was allegedly driving under the influence when he ran his 1999 Chevy Silverado into a 2009 Nissan sedan on Kelton Drive without stopping on April 8 at 8:20 p.m. A witness followed the vehicle and reported the license number to police, who arrested Zavaleta on Desert Bloom Place and Sunset Drive for a hit-and-run, driving under the influence, and driving unlicensed. He was taken to the police department and released with a court date the next day.
