Gilroy – Police provided a description of the man suspected of trying to con an elderly Gilroy resident out of $8,000 Tuesday afternoon. The suspect is described as a black man about 30 years old, of thin build.

He was in the parking lot of 1st United Federal Credit Union near Church Street and Welburn Avenue, and told the bank customer he was from a foreign country and had $100,000 in an account, police said.

The suspect also told the man he didn’t think American banks would allow him to withdraw large sums of money, and then reportedly challenged the man to withdraw a lot of money to prove it could be done.

The elderly man was withdrawing $8,000 from his account when the suspect was scared out of the parking lot, seemingly by some Sheriff’s deputies who happened to be driving through the area.

Gilroy police were on their way to the bank, after being alerted of the apparent scam by a clerk there.
