GILROY—A 57-year-old man died Tuesday after he was struck in a hit-and-run incident on Sept. 4, Gilroy Police Department Sgt. Royce Heath said.
A vehicle struck the man, who has not been identified, at the intersection of Church Street and Gurries Drive sometime before 11 p.m.
Authorities found the man lying unconscious in the street at 11:03 p.m. suffering from “massive trauma,” according to police.
He was airlifted to a San Jose hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, but died from his injuries Tuesday afternoon, Heath said.
Witnesses told investigators it might have been a small or mid-sized white SUV that struck the man, before its driver fled northbound on Church Street.
Authorities are seeking any other witnesses to the collision in hopes of locating the driver.
If found, the driver will likely face felony hit-and-run and possibly vehicular manslaughter charges, depending on the facts of the case, Heath told the Dispatch.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to call the GPD at (408) 846-0350 and ask for Corporal John Ballard or Officer Rene Arbizu.
