GILROY—Every October, football players around the country add some pink to their uniform to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Companies such as Nike and Under Armour design pink socks, gloves, towels and mouthguards—among other things—and donate part of the proceeds to breast cancer research foundations.
The football players at Christopher decided they don’t want just part of the proceeds to benefit breast cancer research, they want all of it to.
In lieu of buying and sporting pink apparel, the Cougars are taking all the money they would’ve spent and are putting it together to make one big donation to a breast cancer awareness organization at the end of October. They want to make their donation as big as possible and are calling on Christopher fans to help by donating money at halftime during this week’s 7:30 p.m. contest against Watsonville and its Sept. 17 home game against Monte Vista Christian.
“We talked about putting our money where our mouth was,” Cougar coach Tim Pierleoni said. “Instead of making it about ourselves with wearing pink, we’re going to make it about the people we’re trying to help. I thought the kids really stepped up when we talked about that. They saw that they could do something really special with that money. I’m really proud of them.”
Christopher will also wear a pink ribbon on its helmets through the month of October.
