SAN JOSE—Piedmont Hills got the better of Gilroy in Week 4, beating the Mustangs 51-26 Friday in San Jose.
“Piedmont Hills was the better team tonight. They came out fast,” Gilroy head coach Jubenal Rodriguez said. “We basically waited until the second quarter to start playing football.”
The Mustangs found themselves in a 38-14 hole at halftime, but kept fighting. In the second half, Jon Jon Castro delivered a bomb to Tanner Wiggins, to cut Piedmont Hill’s lead to 51-20. Wiggins led Gilroy with two touchdown receptions in the game.
David Munoz had a score in the first half for the Mustangs. Matthew Griffith capped off scoring with a touchdown late in the game.
The Mustangs (1-2) will open Monterey Bay League-Pacific Division play at 2 p.m. Oct. 3 against Watsonville at Christopher High. Before then, Rodriguez said his team has a lot to work on.
“We need put two and two together,” the Gilroy coach said. “We had a good defensive game against Sobrato but not an offensive game. Tonight we had a pretty good offensive game but not a good defensive game. We just have to put those together in the same game and we can be a pretty good team.”
