Gilroy Mustangs

It was a busy weekend for the Christopher and Gilroy track and field teams. 
Both competed in the Bill Kearney Invitational Saturday with the Cougar girls finishing the highest in 12th place, followed by the Gilroy boys in 14th. The Christopher boys were 18th, while the Mustang girls team tied for 20th.
Christopher also sent its elite to the Top 8 meet Friday at Los Gatos High School. The girls team finished in ninth place with 16 points, while the boys tied for 37th. 
Top 8
Vanessa Koontz and Ally Foster both took bronze at the meet in the 400-meter dash and triple jump, respectively. Voontz finished the 400m in 58.87 and also took seventh in the 200m dash (25.97). 
Foster’s 36-03.25 mark in the triple jump earned her a third place finish, her best place of the meet. She also took fifth in the long jump with a 17-05 mark and sixth in the 100m hurdles in a time of 15.70.
Natalie Gutierrez and Cody Oberlander both finished sixth in the high jump at 4-10 and 6-00, respectively. Haley Romero took eighth in the long jump at 17-00. 
Bryan Pipkin rounded out the boys competition with a 12th place finish in the pole vault with a 11-08 mark. The girls 400 relay team finished 13th in 50.67.
Bill Kearney Invitational
Gilroy’s Tim Van Horn and Christopher’s Kimberlyn Gilmour both earned second place finishes Saturday. 
Van Horn went 6-04 in the high jump for silver and took seventh in the long jump (18-00) for the Mustangs. He took 11th in the triple jump (36-11) ahead of teammate Jorge Murillo (35-01) who finished 14th. Murillo also took sixth in the high jump with a 5-06 mark.
Gilmour went 31-08.75 in the shot put, which was good for second place. She also took 14th in the discus for the Cougars with a 74-09 mark.
Pipkin took fifth in the pole vault, going 10-06. Gilroy’s Kayla Gonzalez finished sixth in the 3200m in 14:21.13. Concetta Fredricks was 12th in the 400m in a time of 68.81.
Daniel Ordaz took 18th in the 400m for Gilroy (56.08) and 22nd in the 800m (2:12.51). Javier Alejo was 19th in the 100m dash (12.12) and 22nd in the 200m dash (24.80) for the Mustangs. Jesus Ochoa took 22nd in the 3200m (12:13.02) and 33rd in the 1600m (5:21) to round out Gilroy’s varsity action.
Gilroy’s Nicole Holder was on her game, earning a first place finish in the high jump (4-10) and second place in the triple jump (29-11) in frosh/soph competition. Savanna Brown was fifth in the high jump at 4-00. Brown also finished 12th in the long jump at 12-06 ahead of teammate Margaret Pickford who took 16th with a 9-03.25 mark.
Monica Ruelas took second in the frosh/soph 3200m for Gilroy in 12:53.93 and sixth in the 1600m in 5:56.85 to help the Gilroy frosh/soph girls finish eighth.
Christopher’s Kyle Ettema was third in the frosh/soph pole vault with a 10-06 mark. Victor Sanchez took 15th in the frosh/soph shot put (35-06.50) and 16th in the discus (81-11).
