Jaylan Gallardo pitched 6.2 innings, Justin Nelson had three RBIs and the Gilroy High baseball team defeated Hayward 4-2 in nonleague action Saturday in Gilroy.
After Bubu Garcia, who earlier in the game smacked a solo home run, and Jordan Dexter were intentionally walked in the bottom of the sixth, Nelson stepped up and delivered a bases-clearing double to left field.
Marcus Medina tossed the game’s final out to earn the save. The Mustangs are 2-0 and start Tri-County Athletic League play with a home-and-home with San Benito Beginning Tuesday in Hollister. The two teams play in Gilroy on Thursday. Both games are slated for 4 p.m.
Track and field
The Christopher High track and field team set eight school records at the Willow Glen Invitational on Saturday in San Jose.
In finishing fourth overall, the girls’ 4×100-meter relay – Ally Foster, Cailin McCarry, Haylee Peterson, Carly McPolin – recorded a 53.08 seconds race to kick off the record day. Peterson and McCarry, along with Natalie Gutierrez and Monique Esparza, teamed up on the 4X400 relay and posted a 4:23.41 for another CHS record. Others to leave their mark Saturday were: McPolin, 100-meter dash, (13.29, fourth); Esparza, 800 (2:30.08, fifth); Rachel Allen, 1-mile (6:00.63); Foster, triple jump (31 feet, 7 inches) and long jump (14 feet, 1-and-a-half inches); Wyatt Rocheleau 400 (57:00.)
McPolin, a freshman, won an individual medal for her 100-meter effort. At the junior varsity level, Jeremiah Ofiana took second in the 65-meter hurdles and third in the 300 intermediate hurdles. And Bryan Pipkin placed first in the pole vault.
Gilroy High’s lone participant, senior Jourdan Soares – a returning Central Coast Section champion in the 100, cruised to a gold in that race Saturday, clocking a relaxing 11.37.
Volleyball
The Gilroy High boys volleyball team swept rival San Benito (29-27, 25-23, 25-18) in the teams’ Tri-County Athletic League Valley Division opener on Thursday night in Gilroy.
Connor Escobar posted a career-high 21 kills for the Mustangs. He and Troy Charvet shared the digs high with 17 apiece. Greg Spellman had 30 assists, Johnny Lester contributed 14 kills and Lucas Gravell had five blocks for the defending league champions.
GHS (3-4 overall) participated in the Campbell Volleyball Varsity Classic at Leigh High School on Saturday, going 2-3 with wins over Valley Christian and Eastside College Prep. The Mustangs lost to Lynbrook 2-0 in the Silver Bracket semifinals.
The Mustangs are on the road all this week – at Palma on Tuesday, at Salinas on Thursday and a nonleague match at Mt. Madonna on Friday night. All matches are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
