Gilroy Mustangs

It took the Mustangs about 10 minutes to find their groove against Greenfield and once they did, they were practically unstoppable.
Gilroy picked up its first win of the season, cruising past Greenfield 3-0 Monday at home.
Samantha Gonzalez led the Mustangs with two goals—one in each half. Alexi Slattery also scored for Gilroy and had an assist.
In the 25th minute Jackie Gomez gathered the ball on the Hawks’ side of the field and dribbled it up field, connecting with Gonzalez who finished the drive and put Gilroy up 1-0.
Slattery and Agust Gomez each had two shots on goal in the first half, but were unable to knock them past the Hawks’ netminder. On the other side of the field, Gilroy goalie Victoria Rodriguez denied three shots.
Slattery finally broke through and scored her second goal of the season early in the second half to put the Mustangs up 2-0.
Gonzalez scored her second goal of the night just five minutes later, assisted by Slattery and Chelsey Robles. Slattery had a chance to put the Mustangs up by one more after being fouled outside the penalty area. Her penalty kick hit the crossbar and was cleared by the Hawks’ defense.
The Mustangs’ defense had another strong showing, thanks to stellar play from Tayler Silacci, Angela Leondardo, Jessica Koppell and Monica Ruelas.
Iris Aparicio, Lizette Alcantar and Ellie Sausen provided strong play in the midfield for Gilroy. Kayla Gonzalez also came up big, barely missing scoring two goals from right in front.
Gilroy (1-3) was scheduled to play Aptos Thursday at home, but the contest has been rescheduled to Jan. 5 due to the impending storms. The Mustangs will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at Archbishop Mitty.
