The Gilroy girls soccer team beat Notre Dame 4-2 Friday at home.
The result improves the Mustangs to 5-3-2 overall, 6-9-2 in league.
Gilroy started strong as Alexi Slattery scored in the third minute off an assist from Chelsey Robles. Coach John Slattery said he thought the Mustangs might have an easy game after that, but the Spirits proved him wrong.
Notre Dame scored the equalizer in the 30th minute and took a 2-1 lead with a goal just four minutes into the second half.
Victoria Rodriguez stood guard in the net for Gilroy—her first game back after suffering an injury early in the season—and made key saves to combat the Spirits relentless attack.
Samantha Gonzalez tied the game at 2-all in the 49th minute, scoring off an assist from Agust Gomez. Gonzalez broke away and fired a shot, but the Notre Dame goalie got a glove on it. The Mustangs followed through on her shot, however, and put the ball in the empty net.
Gomez was fouled at the 25-yard-line in the 54th minute and took a shot to the top left corner. Iris Aparicio pounced on the rebound and scored her first goal of the season to put Gilroy up 3-2.
About six minutes later, Monica Ruelas found Robles on the left side of the field. Robles went head-to-head with a defender into the penalty area and fired a hard shot to left of the keeper for the final score.
Gilroy will play at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at Salinas and will close out the regular season against Christopher at 5:45 p.m. Friday at home.
