An eight-run fourth inning was the nail in the coffin for Gilroy in its crosstown bout with Christopher.Â
The Cougars trailed 2-1 before putting up a crooked number in the fourth inning to beat the Mustangs 12-2 in five innings at Gavilan Friday to sweep the season series. The win was crucial for Christopher as it keeps the team tied for second place in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division with Monterey—both of which boast a 9-7 league record.
Gilroy was the first to draw blood, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Christopher answered with a run in the bottom of the third before the crucial fourth inning and added three more in the fifth for the final.Â
Brian Easton got the win on the bump, allowing two runs on five hits through five innings. He struck out two and walked one.Â
Josh Wheat led the Cougars at the plate with two hits and two RBIs in addition to a run scored. Ralphy Ortega also had two hits and a run, while Kevin Willard went 1 for 1 with two runs, an RBI and was hit by pitch.
For Gilroy, Anthony Fortino was handed the loss after allowing seven runs—four earned—on three hits through three and two thirds innings. He also walked two and struck out three.
Sammy Aptekar and Jimmy Lemberger both recorded RBIs for the Mustangs.
Christopher (14-10) will play its final home game of the regular season at 4 p.m. Tuesday against San Benito.Â
Gilroy (7-14 overall, 5-11 in league) also played a non-league contest against Aptos at home Saturday, which it lost 7-3.Â
The Mustangs scored first, notching a run in the bottom of the first. Their lead was short lived, however, as Aptos would answer with a two-spot in the top of the second.Â
Aptos scored another in the top of the third, but Gilroy cut the lead to one with a run of it’s own to make it 3-2. The Mariners struck again scored another in the top of the fourth, two more in the fifth and another in the sixth. Gilroy was able to score once more in the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to push any more runs across the plate.Â
Joe Vanni was handed the loss for the Mustangs, pitching all seven innings while allowing seven runs—six earned—on 12 hits. He walked and struck out two.Â
Travis Moulden, Justin Hale and Lemberger all had RBIs in the game. Bubba Lara, Dallas Wilson and Hector Lopez, Jr. all scored the runs.Â
Gilroy will play its final game of the regular season at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Salinas.Â
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Cougars earn first round home game
The Christopher boys volleyball team will face off against the No. 10 seeded Junipero Serra at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of Central Coast Section Division I playoffs.
The Cougars earned the No. 7 seed following a 22-12 regular season.Â
The winner of Tuesday’s contest will advance to play at No. 2 seed Mountain View at 7 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Christopher falls to Pacific Collegiate
The Christopher lacrosse team lost its home finale 11-6 to Pacific Collegiate Wednesday.Â
