BELMONT—Gilroy High made its presence known amongst a crowd of more than 250 runners at Saturday’s Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont.
Junior Monica Ruelas, who has taken first in the last two league meets, knocked nearly a minute off her previous race time to take 26th. She finished the course in a blazing 20:04.
Senior Karla Lozano recorded a personal record of 22:28, followed by Aida Olmos who finished in 23:04.
On the boys side, Eric Heiser led the Mustangs and finished the course in 18:08. Heiser came close to his PR, which is in the 17s for a three-mile course.
Head coach Cathy Silva said her 10 Mustangs are averaging 6 minutes, 7 seconds on three-mile courses.
The Mustangs will be back at it at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park.

FIELD HOCKEY
Mustangs notch first ‘W’ on new field
Gilroy shutout Carmel 4-0 in only its second game on the brand new turf at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex Friday.
Maddy Cox led the offense with two goals. Ang Hays scored on a corner from in front of the net and Carli Coyler capped off scoring for the Mustangs.
Gilroy coach Adam Gemar said the team saw solid play from both Jessica Koppel on defense and Ang Leonardo, both of whom were moved into different positions.
“Moving players allows us to get new looks and a different feel for what works,” Gemar said via email. “Everyone has a different style of play and sometimes those styles come out in positive team play and movement when you move them.”
Gilroy also played Mitty on Wednesday, but lost 2-0. Goalie Savanna Castro made six saves in the game.
The Mustangs (10-2-2 overall, 5-0 in league) will host Salinas at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL
Mustangs sweep Condors
Gilroy closed out the first half of its season on a high note, sweeping North Monterey County 3-0 Thursday. The Mustangs won 25-20, 25-16, 25-20.
Sarah Weiby notched four straight aces. Jasmin Rodriguez and Evelyn Clonts recorded three kills apiece.
Gilroy (2-4 overall, 1-4 in league) will host North Salinas at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Mustangs top Eagles
Erika Cates struck for six goals and helped Gilroy to its first league win, a 15-9 victory over Everett Alvarez at home Thursday.
Cates also had three assists in the game. Lexi Pino was solid on defense, recording three deflections and four steals for Gilroy. She also had a goal and an assist.
Goalie Vanessa Marquez tallied 17 saves in the game for the Mustangs.
Gilroy will be back in the water at 5 p.m. Tuesday at San Lorenzo Valley.
GIRLS TENNIS
Mustangs fall to Spirits
Notre Dame-Salinas handed Gilroy a 5-2 loss Thursday at home.
The No. 1 doubles team of Nicole Holder and Savanna Brandon remain undefeated and blanked their Spirits counterparts 6-0, 6-4.
Maggie Pickford and Mya Esquivel, the No. 2 team, also won their match and needed a tiebreaker to do it. The Mustangs won 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
No. 1 singles Angela Martin lost 6-2, 6-0 while Didi Bakita 6-0, 6-1. Brea Martin, the No. 3, lost 6-0, 6-0 and Catherine Bell, Gilroy’s No. 4, fell 5-1, 6-1.
The No. 3 doubles team of Sofia Magana and Daniela Castillo also lost 7-6, 6-2/
“No one lost here,” Mustangs coach Ray Blagof said via email. “We were a team and everyone gave their best. We remain a proud team with our smiles beaming.”
Gilroy (2-5) will host Watsonville at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Cowboys sweep Cougars
Salinas made quick work of Christopher as it swept the Cougars 7-0 Thursday on the road.
Christopher had flickers of hope in the No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles matches, but was unable to come away with the win.
No. 2 Kaitlyn Lombardo dropped her first set 7-5 and fought to tie the second, but dropped it 7-5.
The No. 3 doubles team of Camryn Crowley and Sara Blawski went up 4-1 early in their first set only to see the Cowboys comeback to win 7-5. Salinas took the second set 6-3.
The Cougars No. 1 singles player Syndey Tran lost 6-0, 6-1, while No. 3 Niet Khay fell 6-2, 6-1. No. 4 singles Toni Martinez also lost 6-0, 6-3.
On the doubles side, the No. 1 team of Malia Campos and Samantha Ramirez lost 6-1, 6-4. The No. 2s, Kelly Nantais and Cher Choi also fell 6-1, 6-0.
Christopher (3-4 overall) will be back on the court at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Alisal.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Cougars fall to Aptos
Christopher only notched one goal against Aptos Thursday as it lost 12-1 on the road.
The Cougars’ lone goal came in the third quarter. The Mariners, on the other hand, scored three in each quarter for the final.
Christopher (4-8 overall, 0-6 in league) will host San Benito at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
