Gilroy Mustangs

The Gilroy cross country team got a taste of what to expect at the Central Coast Section Championships this year.
The team ran at the Crystal Springs Invitational Saturday, the same course that will be run at the CCS finals.
Despite the difficulty of the course, three Mustangs were still able to find success.
Sean Kaufman was the first to cross the finish line for the GHS varsity team,  finishing in 17:41. He was followed by teammate Kairo Barroso who finished in 18:00.
For the girls, Monica Ruelas finished the course in a solid time of 21:05. Bianca Becerra, despite tripping and scrapping up her knees in the first mile, finished in 24:58 for the Mustangs.
Freshman Jonathan Viveros broke his personal record of 18:09, finishing the course in 17:51.
Gilroy will be back in action at the Monterey Bay Invitational at Toro Park Saturday.

St. Francis hands Gilroy first loss of the season
The Gilroy field hockey team was handed its first loss of the season, falling 6-2 to St. Francis at home Thursday.

The Mustangs are now 6-1-2 overall, 3-21 in league.

“We learned a lot from this loss,” Mustangs coach Adam Gemar said. “We were able to see where we really need work and how to concentrate our efforts into improving our team as a whole.  We will meet them again at the end of the season, just before playoffs, and that will help determine where will are.”

The Mustangs will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to host Leland.

The Christopher volleyball team dropped its first set against Watsonville, but rebounded with three dominant sets over the visitors.
