Christopher’s match with Pacific Grove was as close as it gets.Â
The reigning Monterey Bay League champion Cougars waited with bated breath as their cards were tallied, revealing a one-point win—269-270—over Pacific Grove at home Monday.Â
Natalie Gutierrez was the Medalist of the match, carding a 46. Alex Granados was close behind with a 50 on the day.Â
The rest of the Christopher team also had a stellar day as each golfer finished under 60 for the first time this season. Nina Velez finished at 56, Mia Navarro scored a 58 and Frankie Vanni a 59.Â
Christopher also topped Notre Dame on Thursday 232-291. Gutierrez was also the medalist in this match, scoring a 36. Navarro finished with 40, Granados a 44, Velez carded a 50 and Jordan Carrasco finished with a 62.Â
The win over Notre Dame served as a rebound from the team’s season opening 309-264 loss to Stevenson on Sept. 9 at Spyglass Hill.Â
The Cougars will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Monterey County.Â
Mustangs top Alisal
The Gilroy girls golf team won its first match of the year—and its first in at least two years—after defeating Alisal 336-354 Monday at Gavilan Golf Course.
Lizette Alcantar carded a 52 and was the match medalist for the second time this season. Nicole Dan lowered her previous score by 11 strokes, finishing with a 58. Alessandra Esposito played her first round for the Mustangs this season and finished with a 64.Â
Gilroy also played at San Benito Thursday, but Dan was the team’s lone golfer. She scored a 69 on the San Juan Oaks course and the Balers bested Gilroy 302-393. (A team automatically gets scored 81 for each vacant spot on the six-golfer roster.)
Gilroy will take on Catalina at Gavilan Golf Course at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
VOLLEYBALL
Mustangs record first win against Breakers
Gilroy picked up its first victory of the year with a 3-0 sweep of Pacific Grove Monday at home.Â
Sarah Weiby led the offense with five kills and an ace in the Mustangs’ hard fought 25-23, 25-19, 25-24 win over the Breakers.Â
Gabby Martinez added three kills and an ace, while Evelyn Clonts had two kills and four blocks. Gloria Bernal served up four aces for Gilroy.
Mustangs coach Elaine Price said the defensive passing from Sarhay Luna and Desiree Cundiff made it difficult for the visitors to put the ball to the floor.Â
The JV team (0-2) lost in two to Pacific Grove 19-25, 17-25.Â
Michele Mickelson had two blocks and a kill, while Jade Borges had a kill.
