The City is in the early talks of expanding the aesthetic look of Monterey Street in downtown Gilroy to Fourth and Fifth Streets.

The Fourth and Fifth Streets Streetscape project is a part of the City’s plan to beautify downtown, and includes giving the two side streets decorative upgrades to match the look of Monterey Street.

The project involves constructing wide sidewalks with brick accents, welcome banners, decorative trashcans, benches, bike racks, tree gates and Sycamore tree planting. It also includes the addition of a bicycle route, parking spots and lit pedestrian crosswalk signs, according to a City staff report.

The project will include Fourth and Fifth Streets from Monterey Street to Eigleberry Street.

With these upgrades, the City hopes that downtown will become a friendlier place for pedestrians.

Called an “essential element” of the City’s end-goal for a total downtown renovation by the staff report, the project will be discussed at tonight’s Planning Commission meeting.

The Planning Commission is a seven-member board that discusses and approves land-use and building projects before recommending them to City Council.

Since the project is in early stages, a price tag has not yet been determined.
