Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve

The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority will have a public workshop March 4 to provide information and solicit input on how to facilitate and manage use and access to the Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve in south San Jose.

The workshop will take place at the library at Ann Sobrato High School, 401 Burnett Ave. Registration will start at 6 p.m., and the workshop will go from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve is a 348-acre preserve that sits just north of Morgan Hill, according to Santa Clara County OSA spokeswoman Patty Eaton.

The purpose of the March 4 meeting is to prepare a “use and management plan” for the property which is currently devoid of any public recreational or access facilities. The use and management plan will serve as a “guiding vision” to provide access, while protecting the natural resources and allowing certain agricultural uses at the Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve, Eaton said.

The plan will also outline plans for the ongoing maintenance and operations of the preserve, according to authorities. The public is encouraged to attend the March 4 meeting.

Future plans for the Coyote preserve include possible trails, picnic areas, shade structure, interpretive panels and staging areas.

The OSA purchased the property in 2010, according to a staff report to be presented at the Coastal Conservancy’s Feb. 14 board meeting. At that meeting, the Coastal Conservancy board will consider contributing $150,000 to the county OSA to begin the public access and natural resource protection plan.
