For the Gilroy High football team last week’s loss against Archbishop Mitty is a forgotten bump in a road that leads through a long season.
The Mustangs face another strong opponent tonight in Atascadero, a team similar to Mitty, which features a bruising run game.
“Their offensive line is one of the best coached lines around,” defensive coordinator Chris Vasseur said. “They are big and physical. They are going to get you at the point of attack and try to push you back. From a defensive perspective the game is going to be won up front.”
Atascadero has rushed for 321 yards in two games, led by Tanner Thompson who has averaged 80 yards per game so far.
The Mustangs most important priority may be stopping the run, as they surrendered 303 yards last week.
“Their concepts are similar to what we saw last week,” head coach Greg Garcia said. “I don’t think their game plan will have much of an affect on us.”
Injuries plagued the Mustangs a week ago, but with the exception of a couple players, all the pieces of the puzzle are right back where they need to be.
“I’m looking for us to sustain some drives and take advantage of what’s given to us,” Garcia said about his offense, which put up just 13 points last week.
Tonight’s game is at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex at 7:30.
