City Council and mayoral elections are coming up, and the
residents are clearly anticipating an airing of issues and a
spirited campaign
The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For Gilroy residents who are clearly anticipating the coming November City Council and mayoral elections. A word to voters: Stay focused on critical thinking: Do the actions match the words, and is there honesty and substance to what sounds sincere and compelling?
CHEERS: For retired teacher and artist Carol Peters who painted, then donated a portrait of former Mayor Roberta Hughan which will be displayed in the restored Willey House. It’s a thoughtful gesture and a nice tribute to Gilroy’s first lady.
CHEERS: For the two area park improvements announced this week. Santa Clara County will upgrade the campsites at Coyote Lake and add 10 acres to Harvey Bear Ranch. Our recreational facilities are not only close to home, but they are among the most varied and versatile in the state.
JEERS: For the ongoing school facility crisis. With every week that goes by without resolution, the march toward portable classrooms, an unfinished and/or incomplete second high school and a general decline in the quality of life in Gilroy gets closer. Meet, bargain, compromise and hammer out a plan. Oh, and lead. That’s what city officials, developers and school district officials need to do.
JEERS: For the mountain lion intrusion into the Cañada Road area. (Yes, we do know how to spell the road name.) Pet goats are being killed and the Department of Fish and Game has issued a depredation permit. That’s the right course of action, meanwhile, if you live in the country stay alert especially in late summer and fall when low water supplies can contribute to wildlife meanderings.
CHEERS: For the Gilroy Little League girls 11- and 12-year-old all-stars who made it to the Softball World Series. That’s two years in a row a Gilroy girls squad has made the trip to Portland for the “big show.” It’s becoming a tradition that will likely pay off in a world title down the road. A parade honoring the team will start at 11am Saturday at the train depot and head north on Monterey.
