A heat advisory is in effect in South Santa Clara County, where temperatures shattered previous records Monday.
It was a sweltering 97 degrees in Morgan Hill today, and in Gilroy temperatures reached 99, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecaster Dwane Dykema said Gilroy’s high “easily broke the record” for the day, which previously sat at 86 degrees on the same date in 1992. Records for Morgan Hill are not monitored by the NWS.
As a result, the NWS announced a heat advisory in the region for Monday and Tuesday, from 12 to 8 p.m. The city of Morgan Hill responded by ensuring two of its largest facilities will be open with the air-conditioning turned up as long as the warning is in effect.
The Community and Cultural Center at 17000 Monterey Road, and the Centennial Recreation Center at 171 W. Edmundson Ave. will be open during the heat advisory for citizens to take refuge from the heat, according to Morgan Hill Emergency Services Director Jennifer Ponce.
She added that if the mercury doesn’t fall enough before 8 p.m. to take stress off those who are sensitive to the heat, the city will extend the facilities’ hours.
The NWS heat advisory is targeted toward the elderly, infants, sick people and others who are sensitive to the heat. A press release from the NWS says people should drink plenty of water and seek cool locations while the temperature is up.
Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s again Tuesday, with a forecasted high of 92 in Morgan Hill. It will cool off significantly by the end of the week, with a high of 68 expected for Thursday.
City of Gilroy officials could not be contacted for comment.
