Costa drains two baskets in fourth quarter of 20-19 victory
GILROY – The Red Blazers rallied past the Monarchs 20-19 Saturday to snap a losing streak in Girls’ Grade 5 basketball at Gilroy High School’s Bob Hagen Memorial Gymnasium.
Emily Costa dropped in two field goals in the fourth period as the Blazers (1-5) erased a 17-14 deficit. Erin Chisolm joined Costa atop the scoring chart with six points apiece for the winners. Katelyn Nebesnick poured in eight points for the Monarchs. Anna Costa, Kali Cantu and Amber Gorman keyed the Blazer defense, while Adrianna Gutierrez hit two buckets, Leah Ailes and Colleen Tanaka one hoop apiece.
The Sparks clinched a share of the regular-season title with a 16-10 nod over the Jazz. Lauren Rhodes paced the 6-0 Sparks with six points, while Cassidy Daley and Chelsea Hill netted four apiece. Jessica Jarvis and Daly pulled down 10 rebounds each for the winners. Ale Filice anchored the Sparks defensive play. Dani Hemeon exploded for eight second-half points for the Jazz. Marissa Admankhani and Jenae Robinson each had two assists while directing the Jazz offense.
The Sonixs moved to 3-3 with a 22-15 decision over the Magic. Sarah Lira scored six points as the Sonixs erased a 15-12 deficit after three periods. Ashley Lambert scored nine Magic points.
Boys’ 5 Grade:
The Lakers collected two wins Saturday to move to 5-1 in Gilroy Community Services Department play at Gilroy High School.
Chris Catanzaro scored 10 points with eight steals and Sean Monroe hit for seven points and earned 12 rebounds as the Lakers trimmed the Blazers Saturday morning 25-15. Cameron Yawary scored five points, Ronnie Short four for the Blazers.
Monroe added nine points, Dylan Jensen eight in the afternoon win over the Warriors, 21-10. Chris Drysdale and Matthew Jackson each scored four Warrior points.
A.J. Been scored six points and Quillan McJunkin and Jorge Sanchez added four each as the Magic outlasted the Spurs 14-8. David Guenther notched four points for the Spurs, while Jordan Suniga grabbed six rebounds, Nick Chang two boards and Allen Silhanek two steals.
Girls’ 6-7 Grade:
Emily Loera tallied six points Saturday as the 5-0 Lady Celtics defeated the Sparks 15-9.
Kristen Vonderwerth provided five points, Jennifer Rose four for the winners. Rebecca Dickerson claimed eight rebounds, while Marla Tomorug and Rahni Giardina provided defensive production. Kristy Pineda scored five Sparks points.
Desiree Pierce fired in 29 points as the Liberty powered by the Kings 51-17. Katie Kishimura netted 15 Liberty points. Kelsy Ramirez scored 10 points, Alex Marshall five for the Kings.
Rebekah Komar and Jessica Gomez each struck for six points as the 4-1 Five Five topped the Spurs 23-10. Laura Spellman and Kaitlyn Kroeger added five points each, Kaitlyn Muraoka five boards and two assists. Kathryn Elston and Lydia Teschera each scored three Spurs points, while Ariel Payne drilled a 14-footer at the final buzzer for the 2-4 Spurs.
Boys’ 6-7 Grade:
The Orange Crush is 5-0 after a 17-8 win over the Suns Saturday at Gilroy High School.
Kaohu Gaspar popped in six points, Lukas Fortino five for the Crush. Joaquin Silva made three free throws in the first half for the Suns.
Steven Valdez and J.J. Lam scored four points each in the first half as the Knicks built a 10-4 lead and held off the Runnin’ Rebels 18-11. Jose Almeda hit one three-pointer in a five-point showing for the Rebs. Nick Marra made two baskets in the fourth period for the Rebels.
The Blue Devils built a 15-10 lead after one period and topped the Magic 37-32. Mario Cid scored 16 points, Greg Hamik 12 for the 4-2 Devils. Sean Hale notched 13 points, Raul Quintanar netted six points and Nick Colman four for the 2-3 Magic.
Girls’ 8-10 Grade:
The Monarchs trimmed the Sparks 19-18 to break a tie for first place in the four-team league Saturday at Solorsano Gymnasium.
Cristal Bonowski’s 3-pointer in the fourth period made the difference for the 5-1 Monarchs. Stephanie Salario finished with eight points, Bonowski seven for the leaders. Amanda Spellman made eight points for the 4-2 Sparks.
The Queens of the Court improved to 3-3 with a 22-11 decision over the Celtics. Emily Good dropped in eight points, Elizabeth Komar six for the Queens. Joanna Lance and Amber Etienne each netted four Queens markers. Danielle Valdez made five points, Tiani Louis four for the Celtics.
Boys’ 8-10 Grade:
The Rockets took a one-game lead in the pennant chase Saturday with a 48-36 victory over the Eastside Ballerz at Solorsano Gymnasium.
Frank Tomasetti made 26 points as the Rockets moved to 5-1. Joey Morrow hit for nine points, Ryan Costa eight for the Eastsiders.
The Huskers turned back the Ballerz 37-29 behind 15 points from Garrett Colton. Randy Moya scored eight Husker points, Anthony Bravo nine for the Ballerz.
Jacob Dexter scored 16 points to lead the Sonics by the 76ers 36-29. Derek Jensen scored 14 points, Daniel Contreras nine for the 76ers.
Girls’ 3-4 Grade:
The Broncos upset the Hotshots 17-13 Saturday at Solorsano Gym to leave both teams at 5-1 atop the standings.
The Broncos scored 11 points in the second half to erase a 9-6 halftime deficit. Sara Sauceda scored six points for the winners. Sarina Sandoval produced four points and 19 rebounds for the Broncos, Ashley Bryant four points, five rebounds and three steals. Kaylana Mah made six points for the Hotshots.
The Lady Monarchs topped the Rockets 20-7 behind 14 points from Ashley Williams. Haylee Peterson, Natalie Gutierrez, Amanda Jabr, Gabriella Alnas and Sarah Trujillo produced strong defensive pressure for the winners. Jasmine Gutierrez hustled to one basket and a successful free throw in the fourth period for the Rockets.
Boys’ 3-4 Grade:
Ryan Alba scored six of his 16 points in the fourth period as the unbeaten Cougars defeated the Sonics 20-17 Saturday at Solorsano Gym.
Bryant Cid added four points for the winners, Tannner Holland six points and Dallas Hernandez netted four points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Sonics.
The Cavaliers moved to 6-0 with a 25-10 nod over the Celtics. Louis Bonesio scored eight points, Ryan Bay six for the Cavs. Peter Hilkene tallied six points, Alexander Gutierrez four for the Celtics. The Cougars and Cavaliers meet Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wheeler Community Center for the league lead.
The Warriors trimmed the Raptors 23-20 behind 10 points from Dylan McManus. Niko Fortino made four points in the fourth period to clinch the win for the 4-2 Warriors. Bryant Park used two 3-pointers to score 12 Raptor points.
The Kings topped the Gladiators 24-7 as Brandon Pickens scored nine points. Jason Struzik popped in five rebounds, including one 3-pointer, and Noah Troy garnered five steals for the Gladiators.
