“I’m calling to see if you can find out what is going on on the 8000 block of Carmel Street between Sherwood and Welburn streets. The asphalt on the street has not been paved for at least 12 years that I know of. My daughter lives there and I have to park on that street. It’s all crumbled and cracked. While I’ve watched the other streets in that area get paved, they’ve never paved that street. It’s about time. Could you find out why?”
Red Phone: Dear Cracked Up, Like other programs throughout the city, the budget for street maintenance has been cut back, reducing the amount of work that can be done, said David Stubchaer, operations director for the City of Gilroy.
“About the limit they can do is repair pot holes,” he said. “The city has a program for pavement maintenance, and we’re doing the best we can with the funds available. Unfortunately, there is much more maintenance needed throughout the city than we have maintenance funds for.”
The city tentatively has a pavement maintenance program set up for the end of summer and would consider making repairs to Carmel Street at that time, Stubchaer said. While he said the city will try to work on that street, he couldn’t guarantee it because there could be more urgent areas that need attention.
