Red Phone, I read a couple of months ago about the discrepancy
over the recycling with South Valley Disposal and Recycling. The
answer from the South Valley disposal guy was that the bins were
picked up and put into two separate bins in the garbage truck. Well
this morning I watched and my house is up so I can look down on the
garbage truck and that garbage and recycling goes into the same
place. To spend all that time recycling, and it’s not even
separated! I’m hoping that somebody’s recycling at some point. I
can’t believe this. Look into that please. Thanks.

Looks like it’s being mixed

Dear No it Isn’t, Red Phone passed along your concern to South Valley Disposal and Recycling General Manager Phil Couchee, who said since the start of the new single stream recycling program (use of the blue cart) the company has been using a truck specifically designed to collect garbage and recycling in the same truck, however in separate compartments.

“From the side it appears to all be going together, however if you look from the rear of the vehicle you can clearly see separate compartments, one for garbage and one for recycling,” he said. “Recycling is being kept separate from garbage. In fact, since the start of this new program the volume of recycling collected from the residents of Gilroy has increased 30 percent.”

Stop sign is needed

“Red Phone, I’ve lived in Gilroy for 68 years on David Court. I have requested a stop sign at Hanna and Welburn avenues. I was advised that it is not a priority. But (recently) we had another speeder, and the car completely tipped over. This is the second accident. I’ve been here long enough to know when this street ended at Wayland Lane then was extended. I don’t know what I have to do to get someone to come out here and see. Cars are doing 60 mph. Thank you.”

Dear Frustrated, Red Phone contacted Traffic Engineer Don Dey, who said a review was done at that intersection, and that a four-way stop is not needed at this time.

“From an engineering standpoint, it does not rise to the level of a four-way stop,” Dey said. The Hanna and Welburn intersection is not in the city’s top 50 intersections in terms of accidents, he added. Dey said a recent survey indicates that the speed survey showed the 85th percentile is 38 mph, meaning 85 out of 100 people drive no faster than 38 mph. The speed limit is 30 mph.

So good caller, it seems catching speeders out there is beyond engineering’s capability. Red Phone will forward your complaint to Gilroy’s traffic officer.

“Red Phone, seems like we are more likely to complain than to compliment these days. So I thought I would send this compliment. Officer Jason Smith of the Gilroy Police Department handled a call where my minor child was involved in a physical altercation May 5. I had contact with the officer by phone but was at work so I couldn’t be there with her. I just wanted to thank him for being so kind to her and following through by keeping us informed. These things happen with kids and it’s hard for a parent not to be able to be there. So thank you Mr. Smith for all you did for us.”

Dear Thankful, Red Phone contacted Police Chief Denise Turner, who said it is a real moral booster to hear your compliment.

“I truly appreciate you passing this information on,” she said. “I will insure that Officer Smith receives this feedback.
