Pressure police to solve crimes

All you people that have had your car burglarized need to report
it. Don’t let it go. The only way to crush these low-lifes is to
report every crime and put pressure on detectives to arrest the
thieves and their customers.

Pressure police to solve crimes

“All you people that have had your car burglarized need to report it. Don’t let it go. The only way to crush these low-lifes is to report every crime and put pressure on detectives to arrest the thieves and their customers.”

Dear Crime Watcher,

Red Phone contacted Sgt. Gillio. He said police rely on the community to report all crimes. “Even if you feel your crime is insignificant, it may be related to other crimes and be part of a bigger picture. You are our eyes and ears of the police department.” So, to all residents, no matter how insignificant you think the crime is, report it to police. If they receive a rash of calls in a certain geographic location, they may be able to mobilize officers to combat the crime. And, they just might catch a bad guy.

Gift card refund irks theater-goer

“Please inform Gilroy Theaters that anything less than $10 left on a gift certificate you’re supposed to get cash back. I purchased two passes, popcorn and soda and had $3.50 left but they refused to give it back to me.”

Dear Perturbed,

According to California Civil Code Sections 1749.45-1749.6. A, It depends on the policy of the seller. The gift certificate law states that a seller must redeem a gift certificate or gift card sold after Jan. 1, 1997 for its cash value, or replace it with a new certificate or card at no cost. However, California’s Legislative Counsel has concluded that a seller is not required to redeem a gift certificate in cash when requested by a consumer. Thus, some gift certificate sellers redeem the gift certificate for cash or a combination of merchandise and cash, while some issue a new certificate for any balance remaining. So, good caller, you could always contact the manager and ask for your $3.50, or, at least you’ll get a free small soda the next time you see a movie.

A rattling ride on Monterey Road

“Hey Red Phone. Got in the left turn lane from southbound Monterey Road onto Luchessa Avenue the other day and hit a ditch so large it rattled my teeth. When I made the U-turn onto northbound Monterey Road, I saw the same ditch running across the street. It appears somebody tore up a section of the street to work on something underground. I thought contractors were supposed to replace the pavement to its original state. What’s going on?

Red Phone:

Dear Rattled, Red Phone contacted city engineer Don Dey, who said he’d get right on it.

“I have contacted operations (department) and asked them to repair the pavement on Monterey (Road) at Luchessa (Avenue).” So, keep your fingers crossed good caller. Soon, you’ll have a smooth ride as you make that turn.

Extra pay for extra meetings?

“You recently gave information on the pay of the mayor and city council members. But just recently, the council spent Saturday, Sunday and Monday in all-day policy summit meetings. Do they get additional pay for those meetings that take place on their personal time?”

Dear What-do-they-earn,

Council members, including the mayor, do not receive additional pay for attending weekend meetings. They often schedule those meetings to determine policy on topics such as how to finance sidewalk repairs and open government policies. Those discussions are often far-reaching and cannot be done during regularly scheduled meetings. At this level of the political game, most elected officials don’t do if for the money. They all live in Gilroy and generally have the best interests of the city at heart, whether you agree with them or not. And every two years voters have the chance to
