“The used car lot that used to be at Rucker Avenue and No Name Uno has now started up at Rucker and Center avenues. What can be done to get rid of this ugly site? Cars and trucks and parts of semis litter this field. The weeds were almost a nicer thing to see.”

Red Phone: Dear Out Of Gas, Even though the Santa Clara County Code Enforcement office issued a Notice of Zoning Violation to the owner of the rural property on Center and Rucker avenues for the storage of commercial and disabled vehicles two months ago, Code Enforcement Officer Jim Lanz said it was “no big deal.”

He said he has yet to hear back from the property owner and wasn’t sure if the violation was severe enough to warrant any fines but said he would keep in touch with them. So stay tuned and we’ll let you know how it goes.

There isn’t a connection between the two sites, Lanz said. He talked to the owner of the property on No Name Uno and Rucker Avenue after an earlier Red Phone call and asked him to remove the offending cars. And the cars appear to have been removed, Lanz said. Red Phone made a quick inspection of the area and didn’t see any of the cars previously mentioned.

“I know the owner of that property and I spoke to him when we first got the inquiry, so having the vehicles removed was pretty simple,” Lanz said. “I don’t think there is any connection between these two sites other than their proximity to Rucker.”

Slow down in school zone

“My family lives within walking distance of Rod Kelley Elementary School, where our child attends kindergarten. Needless to say, the traffic there at times is a little hectic. With two lanes going in all directions, sometimes drivers are a little confused about who has the right of way. We notice that drivers are very eager to get through the intersection. Thankfully, the crossing guards are there in the morning and after school. However, my wife was walking back just after the crossing guards were done. As all other lanes stopped to let her through, a car in the far right lane of westbound Mantelli Drive sped through and instead of acknowledging and waving a hand to apologize, this woman continued on and actually looked past to see if there was anyone who would catch her in the act. My point is leave your house earlier or slow down.”

Red Phone: Dear Safety First, Thanks for the reminder. It is indeed important for both drivers and pedestrians to be aware of what is going on around them when traveling near the schools, Gilroy Police Sgt. Wes Stanford said. The couple extra minutes you save isn’t worth the risk of hitting someone.

“A child was struck by a car and killed at that intersection a few years ago, so safety should be on everyone’s priority list, especially around schools,” he said.
