Gilroy – For the second year in a row, the Red Sox have clinched the Gilroy Little League Boys’ Juniors championship.

The top-seeded Red Sox defeated the No. 3 A’s 4-3 Wednesday evening at Gilroy High.

“It was a great season,” said Red Sox coach Dan Salter. “We took first place last year. By the halfway mark, we were having a losing season this year. But they all turned it around and played like I knew they could.”

The Red Sox jumped on the board quickly with three runs in the first. The A’s answered with two and then tied the game in the middle innings with a home run over the fence at the high school field by Eric Vegas.

For the winning team, Jordan Haller, who pitched the second half of the game, hit a triple in the fifth inning and then scored on a fielder’s choice by Matt Elston for the go-ahead run. Max Fischler pitched into the third for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox had lost earlier in the playoffs to the A’s for the only loss of the second half of the season before winning 14-3 Monday to force a final deciding game.

Salter will be managing the Juniors’ All-Star team and will be assisted by Kurtis Salter, his son, and Fernie Torres.
