San Jose – The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters’ Office began mailing permanent vote by mail applications to an estimated 380,000 registered voters this week.

Once the ballot is completed, it is sealed in the provided return envelope, which must be signed by the voter. Ballots can be returned by mail, in person at the registrar’s office, or at any Santa Clara County polling place election day. All ballots must be received at the registrar’s office by 8pm election day (postmarks not accepted).

Permanent vote by mail is an option available to all registered voters. Voters who receive the application in the mail only have to sign the postage-paid reply card and drop it in the mail. Rotary International Projects

Gilroy – In large part because of the efforts of Rotary International, Polio has almost been eradicated. This is just one of the projects that Rotary International helps with around the world. Area 6 clubs – Gilroy, Gilroy Sunrise, Hollister, Morgan Hill and San Juan Bautista – met Thursday at Mama Mia’s restaurant in Gilroy to discuss ongoing and future projects.

Currently, Area 6 clubs have partnered with the Rotary Club in Ameca, Mexico to secure an ambulance, generously donated by American Medical Response, to be sent to that community. Now Area 6 reps are looking to seek donations from local hospitals and/or to make purchases of new medical equipment (such as Jaws of Life, defibrilators, etc.) to stock the ambulance and equip the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) facility in Ameca. On Oct. 18, several area Rotarians will travel to Ameca to discuss with local Rotary members about other possible matching grants projects for their community.

Another country local Rotarians are involved in is Bulgaria. Working in partnership with the Varna, Bulgaria Rotary CLub, together have financed a wheelchair lift project for the Dimcho Debelianov school for disabled kids.

Members Celebrate 60 Years

Gilroy – Members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the John A. Berri Post 6309 Veterans of Foreign Wars recently celebrated their 60th anniversary at the Westside Grill. Lillian Crocker was the first president when the auxiliary was chartered in August 1947. She is the sister of John A. Berri, the first local casualty of WWII. The post was formed by returning veterans who selected the name.

In November 1947, the auxiliary welcomed 66 new members. Without a large meeting room, the initiation was held at the Wheeler Auditorium, with Mayor George Milias and other dignitaries in attendance.

Over the years, the auxiliary promoted patriotism and helped local veterans and their families. Annually they honored the Gold Star Mothers of WWII during a luncheon a the Milias Roof Garden. Today, the group is composed of mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and grandmothers who carry on the tradition to ensure America’s veterans are not forgotten. The auxiliary sponsors a Voice of Democracy essay contest designed to foster patriotism, and gives out other scholarships.

Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, 74 W. Sixth St.
