Retail Boom Marches On

Retail giants HomeGoods and Old Navy set to open today
Gilroy –The retail explosion that has peppered Gilroy’s 10th Street freeway interchange is near capacity and set to generate $3 to $4 million in increased sales tax revenue annually for the city’s general fund.

Pacheco Pass Shopping Center is home to 730,000 square feet of retail stores and restaurants, including Costco, Best Buy and the soon to open Wal-Mart Super Center. The center has just four more sites under construction including a Great Clips, Wells Fargo and two restaurants.

The Gilroy Crossing Center includes at least 475,000 square feet and is nearly completed as well. Famous Dave’s BBQ is currently under construction and the Charleston Company will be breaking ground on an Arby’s soon.

Two retail giants will open today in the Pacheco Pass Shopping Center, Old Navy and HomeGoods. And soon, if shoppers find themselves hankering for a little BBQ they will have three restaurants from which to choose. In addition to the Famous Dave’s BBQ at Gilroy Crossing, Armadillo Willy’s BBQ and L & L BBQ will open soon in the Pacheco Pass Shopping Center.

HomeGoods, one of the stores opening today, offers consumers discounted goods ranging from life-sized pirate statues to bath towels. The 25,000-square-foot store is owned by TJX Companies, Inc, the owners of T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s.

The store opens at 8am for its first day of business and will be handing out tote bags to their first 200 customers. The Gilroy location is the second HomeGoods store in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Old Navy, a clothing store known for its popular teen appeal, will also open its doors for the first time at 9am today.

“Everything is going very well. All the endusers seem to be doing well,” said George Akel, a member of the Newman Development Group which is managing the Pacheco Pass shopping center. “We are excited to welcome Old Navy and HomeGoods.”

The two establishments are just the latest in a long line of stores that have cropped up on the east side of town.

“It’s the opportunity for local residents to have a multitude of different options when it comes to shopping,” Baksa said. “There are very few reasons to have to leave the city of Gilroy to buy products.”

The new shops play a dual role: raising money for the city and giving shoppers a local place to spend their money. Early on – during the environmental impact review and before construction of the two shopping centers began – city officials estimated the Pacheco Pass Shopping Center would bring in $1.66 million and Gilroy Crossings would bring in $1.48 million when all the stores were completed, according to City Administrator Jay Baksa.

“What we have found in shopping centers and new box centers is it takes them two years to totally build up and get their customer base going,” Baksa said.

Councilman Craig Gartman said the final tally on the revenue could be even higher in the future, and he estimated the two centers could pull in as much as $4 to 5 million a year.

“It will probably take four to five years before we see a real big contribution,” Gartman said. “The stores will continue to grow in their revenues so some of these figures are many years down the road.”
