Dazed, Not Confused
Sammy Hagar’s favorite cover band is playing Gilroy Saturday night in a special show where all the proceeds go to veterans.
Daze on the Green is a band with a serious rock & roll pedigree. They were Hagar’s house band at his Roseville cantina. They play for the 49ers and the Sharks. They were finalists in Greg Kihn’s Last Band Standing contest. They rock.
They play the District Theater in Gilroy (7430 Monterey St.) Saturday at 8:30 p.m. with Gilroy opener, Frequency, a band that performs originals. Tickets are $10 and the money goes to the Veteran’s Hall on Sixth Street. There will also be great raffle prizes. If you want to have a fun local night and help a worthy cause, go get dazed.
Speaking of vets
The American Legion Gilroy Post #217 will be celebrating its 95th anniversary June 18 at the Gilroy Veterans Memorial Building with dinner, member recognitions, Veteran of the Year, Volunteer Veteran of the Year and Community Leadership Awards.
The Gilroy Post is the oldest American Veterans organization in Gilroy and the American Legion is also the oldest and largest nationally. Chartered in Gilroy in June 1921, the original building is still standing on the corner of Eigleberry and Fifth streets. Meetings were held there until the present building was built in 1951. The post continues to meet on the first Thursday of the month with a dinner/social on the third Thursday of the month.
Each year members present certificates and medallions to high-achieving middle school students at graduation ceremonies. Scholarships are awarded to Gavilan College students majoring in mathematics, science, business, nursing and liberal arts. This past year 85 college students applied for Gilroy Legion scholarships. The Gilroy post provides Color/Honor Guard presence at veterans’ funerals locally and in surrounding areas including the veteran’s cemetery in Gustine. Members are found leading the Memorial Day Parade and the Veterans Day ceremony. Their presenence is often requested by local schools, Little League opening day ceremonies, Walk for Life, The Garlic Festival, St Louise Hospital and many other events.
This special anniversary dinner will be open to the public as well as all members. Tickets are $20 per person and are pre-sold only. For information contact Ray Sanchez at 408-607-3280, or

GUSD gets a D
We know people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. We’ve made our share of typos over the years. But to see one on a school district mailer that cost $4,780, was reviewed by a phalanx of administrators and consultants and was paid for by tax money, gets some major points off.
The mailer is asking voters to tax themselves $170 million for the schools. Under the heading for accomplishments, it says, “Gilroy USD is the largest employer in Gilroy, with over 1,00 employees.”
Oops. That mistake ended up in 12,886 Gilroy mailboxes.
