GHS field hockey drops 3-2 decision to RLS
CARMEL – The road has not been kind to the Lady Mustang field hockey team – which dropped its second straight away game with Thursday’s 3-2 league loss to Robert Louis Stevenson (RLS).
“We started out very slow and were not playing Gilroy-style hockey at all,” said co-head coach Adam Gemar, whose squad’s record dips to 4-3-2 with only two games remaining. “We simply did not pass the ball well in the first half.”
RLS, on the other hand, started out strong with a pair of first-half strikes to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
“The second half was definitely a different game,” Gemar said. “It ended up with us as hungry as I have ever seen us.”
But RLS poked in a third goal before the Lady Mustangs got going.
Both Gilroy goals came from the same triplet – Maday Garcia from Michelle Morejon and Sandra Aguayo. The first goal was off a short corner. The second from a great shot and nice passing from the top of the circle to beat the RLS goalie far post.
“We had the momentum at this point, and continued to pressure,” Gemar said. “We had moments of greatness. If we stay with our basic game plan (passing, communication and off ball support), we will win the game.
“But today we only played that way for 30 minutes,” he added. “If we come out and play 60 minutes of Gilroy-style hockey, we come away winners. The key is 60 minutes.”
The final whistle blew on a Gilroy short corner with the entire team in the circle. According to Coach Gemar, a game cannot end on a short corner. Gilroy got a few shots off, but RLS ended up barely hitting the ball out of the circle. The Lady Mustangs received the ball and put it back it the circle, but the umpire called the game.
Gemar said the rule states that the ball must cross five yards past the circle in order for the short corner to end.
“We (the coaching staff) were very proud of our girls for not giving up and playing with determination and pride,” Gemar said. “Even though we lost, we never gave up (at the end). But, we need 60 full minutes of hockey.”
Morejon earned Gilroy’s player of the game honors, and Elena Rameriz was outstanding on fifty-fifty ball play.
Up next, the Lady Mustangs host North Salinas on Monday and then conclude their season with a Tuesday home match against Santa Catalina. Both games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
