Gilroy – Some sloppy defense, lackluster offense and a less-than-healthy starting line-up caught up with the Gavilan baseball team over the weekend.

On Friday, the Rams dropped a 4-1 decision to Monterey Peninsula College. On Saturday, they lost to Skyline College, 7-3.

“We had opportunities in all of the games, but were just not getting the breaks,” said head coach Neal Andrade. “It was a long week and a couple days off to get healthy will help.”

The Rams, who played four games in five days last week, take on Ohlone at home today at 2pm.

Gavilan stands at 9-12 overall and 4-7 in conference.

Against Monterey Peninsula College, Gavilan outhit the Lobos 7-5. But out of three bases-loaded scoring opportunities, the Rams drove in just one run.

“We had plenty of opportunities,” Andrade said. “We just could not cash in.”

Todd Gimenez took the loss on the mound. Manny Gonzalez led the offense with two hits and one RBI.

In the loss to Skyline College on Saturday, Gonzalez had another big offensive day that included a home run and two runs batted in. Outfielder Danny Reyes added

two hits.

Gonzalez, who usually plays first base, was limited to DH duties because of a bad knee, but he isn’t the only key Gav player battling injury. According to Andrade, third baseman Justin Baker is also nursing an injured knee and did not play. Shortstop Brett Thygersen has also been playing with a partially separated left shoulder.

“I’m pleased with my club’s performance and hard work during a tough four game-in-a-row stretch.” Andrade said. “We’re a little banged up.”

Andrade said hitting into double plays really hurt the Rams in the game against Skyline. The Trojans turned four double-plays in the game.

The losing pitcher was Ben Glines, who gave up nine hits.
