Sales tax revenue in Gilroy rose by a steady 2.3 percent in the second quarter this year, compared to the second quarter in 2011.
Total tax revenue in the second quarter was $3,012,456 – the biggest spike being from a 31.2 percent jump in car sales for Gilroy auto dealers compared to last year, raking in a total of $279,081 in taxes.
The biggest tax magnet remained the Gilroy Premium Outlets, raking in a total of $698,240 for the quarter.
Gilroy’s downtown also saw a 12 percent jump in positive growth from last year, but remained the smallest of Gilroy’s tax generating categories in the City’s report with a $55,595 capture.
This quarter’s increase is the tenth quarter in a row that has seen positive sales tax revenue.
Gilroy’s growth was middle-of-the-road compared to other cities in Santa Clara County. Morgan Hill’s grew by 22.6 percent, while a few cities including Lost Gatos and Mountain View experienced decline. Overall, Santa Clara County experienced a 6.6 percent decline from last year’s second quarter.
