Jam-packed with roof-raising tunes, “Cookin’ at the Cookery: The Music and Times of Alberta Hunter” is a hand-clappin’, foot-tappin’ delight for music lovers of all ages. Alberta Hunter, once a star of Broadway, the Casino de Paris and the London Palladium, gave it all up at the age of 60 to become a nurse.
The musical celebration is set in 1977 when the 82-year-old legendary singer and songwriter prepares to perform her first show in more than 20 years at Greenwich Village’s “The Cookery,” launching a comeback the likes of which the world had never seen.
“Cookin’ at the Cookery” features Tony Award-winner Ann Duquesnay and Janice Lorraine performing soul-shaking renditions of Hunter’s classic blues and jazz tunes including “Rough and Ready Man,” “My Castle’s Rockin’,” “I’m Having a Good Time,” “Down Hearted Blues” and “The Love I Have for You.” Performances begin on July 2 and continue through Aug. 3, 2003.
