One of Gilroy High’s most worldly students has lived in garlic town her whole life. Sayako Uchida has not only traveled to Japan several times, she speaks Japanese and has worked as a translator when the GHS chamber choir visited Gilroy’s sister city Takko-Machi two years ago.
The experience has given her an interest in working as a tour guide and translator. But it has also opened her eyes to the world of international relations, political science and history.
With all her options open, Uchida will attend UC Davis in September without declaring a major.
Uchida exercised many options during her GHS career. A nearly 4.0 student, Uchida was active in the Interact and California Scholastic Federation clubs and lettered in three sports.
Uchida played badminton, basketball and ran on the varsity cross country team since her freshman year at GHS. Uchida ended her career as a captain for each of those teams.
“Make the most of your time during high school. It flashes before you,” Uchida advises underclassmen and future GHS students.
But there are things she’s “definitely not going to miss” about high school – “the SATs and all the standardized testing,” Uchida said.
