Dear Editor:
I would like to voice my opinion on the suggested closing of the Slingerland Program here in Gilroy.
As the parent of two former GATE students and one former Slingerland student, I can honestly tell you that the most effective and most needed program in our school district and possibly in all school districts is the Slingerland program.
Without Slingerland many of these children will be limited in their ability to function in our dot-com society, in contrary to their counter-part (the GATE children who will excel regardless of the money this school district provides them) will not obtain the most fundamental skills reading and writing.
To end this program would be cruel and an injustice to current and future children with learning disabilities.
I appeal to all parents in the Gilroy District not to let this happen. The school board must be accountable to all children of this district and provide them with an education which will prepare them for lifelong learning and the labor market.
