Another delightful play graces our airwaves this week from Rucker School.

The Mad Adventures of Mr. Toad was captured on video a couple of months ago by one of CMAP’s members, Patrick Glynn. The staff here has been watching him edit these past few months to incorporate all of the camera angles to make for a vibrant production for our viewers.

I decided to check out a few snippets of the play and was amused and impressed by the production. The set, costumes and make-up create a visually rich production; and of course, the kids’ lively performances keep your attention throughout. There is music sprinkled throughout the play that the kids sing and dance to, including “Come to the Woods” and a piece performed by those nasty weasels who describe how they’d like to live like a king as the badger does. Who would have thought …

While I didn’t have a chance to catch the whole production, I enjoyed the musings of the patriarchal badger, timid field mice, and wacky Mr. Toad, who wound up in the hospital a few times from his roller skating and motor car adventures. To find out how Mr. Toad winds up in jail however, you’ll have to tune into ED-TV Channel 19 today at 1 p.m., or Saturday at 2 p.m. Congrats to Patrick on completing a challenging project! And thanks to his volunteer crew for giving the video dimension with the three cameras.

For you folk, bluegrass and blues lovers, have we got a treat for you. CMAP has begun airing a program out of Monterey called Arden’s Garden, featuring KPIG personality Arden Eaton as hostess with the mostest.

Arden books acoustic acts from the area on her program to perform live at Access Monterey Peninsula, the community TV channel in Monterey. Besides enjoying the sweet sounds of the performers, viewers are treated to a brief interview with the talent. Arden encourages the live studio audience to ask the questions, much to the delight of fans who attend.

This weekend, you can catch harmonica guru and vocalist Tom Ball, with guitarist Kenny Sultin. This duo has been performing together off and on since 1979, and it certainly shows. They have a rich chemistry that has grown with time and experience, and shines through on every song.

The duo writes about half of their material, and chooses obscure cover songs, so, as Kenny says, “The versions we play won’t get us in trouble.” You gotta love their version of Hick’s “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away,” and “Fool’s Paradise.” They also perform their very own “Filthy Rich,” a tune inspired by a commercial endorsement deal gone sour.

The duo swore as young, idealistic musicians not to “sell out,” but when Levi’s came knocking on their door, they changed their tune. As Tom Ball says, “Hey, at least we wear Levi’s.” They didn’t feel guilty getting behind that product.

Enjoy the rich sounds of Ball’s harp and Sultin’s tasty guitar on Arden’s Garden, Saturday at 2 p.m., on Public Access Channel 20. For repeat schedules, go to CMAP’s Web site at www.mycmap.org and click on the remote control.
