GILROY – Senior Night is always sweet when the home team walks away with a victory. For the Anchorpoint Christian Warrior’s boys and girls basketball teams, it was twice as nice.
The boys beat visiting Kirby 67-50, while the girls topped their counterparts 47-31 at South Valley Middle School.
“It was a good Senior Night,” Coach K.C. Adams said regarding both of his clubs. “The seniors went out with a bang.”
The victories were achieved through some outstanding individual performances, perhaps aided by the fact that both teams have limited bodies to put on the floor. Both teams have only had seven players on their rosters when fully healthy this season.
Senior Shaq Johnson had 21 points, 12 rebounds and four steals for the boys, and junior Josh Ignagni had 25 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Freshman Marcus Harrell posted the most impressive all-around performance, recording a triple-double with 11 points, 15 assists and 10 steals.
“He’s a true point guard, which is what I love about him,” Adams said.
Two seniors who gave excellent efforts all season, Adams added, were Colton Minyard and Christian McCrimmon.
The ladies had their own stat-sheet filler in victory, as Chelsea Urbanski scored 22 points to go with 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in her final game for the Warriors.
Both teams will play their final game of the season today at York, when the boys tip-off at 4 p.m. and the girls follow at 5:30 p.m.
Despite having no chance at a Coastal Athletic League championship or playoff appearance, this season has been especially fulfilling, Adams said.
“It’s funny because we didn’t win the championship this year, but it was probably the most rewarding season for me because of all that the guys had to go through,” he said.
