Gilroy – School may be back in session, but the City of Gilroy is planning one last summer celebration with the final Summer Concert in the Park on Sunday, from 5-8pm.
And with country rock band Silver Creek taking the stage, the concert is sure to bring the cowboy spirit out in everyone.
“We always have a good time and try not to make it too serious,” said band member Tim Allen.
Silver Creek has been around for many years, though the individual musicians have changed quite a bit. The current members have been together for about four years.
“We perform in nightclubs, which are fun, but it’s nice to see little kids. They always get a kick out of it,” Allen said.
The band members have been playing music for so long, they don’t even need to rehearse together any more. They learn new songs on their own and often play them for the first time in front of an audience. For the concert in the park, they hope to play a couple of their new originals.
The “Summer Concerts in the Park Series” has been going on for more than 26 years. At first the city could only afford to put on one concert a year. As funds have increased, so have the number of concerts.
“It’s exciting to actually have the money in the budget for a fourth concert and extend into September,” said Cathy Mirelez, city cultural arts and museum supervisor.
It takes roughly $1,000 from community donations, grants and sponsorships to hire a band, publicize and pay other expenses for each concert.
“It’s really a wonderful day for families to come together and celebrate different music styles,” Mirelez said explaining the city tries to select bands that appeal to different tastes. When selecting a band, they try to choose local ones and keep the family audience in mind. Next year they hope to put on six concerts, two each in June, July and August. They may also schedule half of the concerts on Fridays and half on Sundays.
