WATSONVILLE — Behind two hits at the plate and five innings of one-run softball atop the mound from pitcher Aly Olvera, the Christopher High softball team opened Monterey Bay League action Tuesday with a 13-1 victory over host Monte Vista Christian in a shortened, five-inning affair.

The game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Olvera tossed five innings in the circle for the Cougars, allowing one unearned run on three hits, while striking out three and walking four.

Monte Vista Christian actually plated its lone run when its leadoff batter, in the bottom of the first inning after Christopher grabbed a 3-0 cushion in the opening frame, hit an inside-the-park home run after the Cougars committed a throwing error to first base.

The overthrow at first allowed the Monte Vista base runner to round the bases toward home, and it initially cut Christopher’s lead to 3-1. But the Cougars, over the next four innings, outscored the Mustangs with 10 unanswered runs.

“We hit the ball well yesterday. It’s the best we’ve hit the ball,” Christopher manager Larry Nabzeska said. “We didn’t get any cheap hits, either. We roped the ball.”

Olvera, Kayla Medrano and Olivia Barajas each connected on two hits, including a single and a double, to lead the Cougars, who improve to 1-0 in the MBL, 5-1-1 overall.

Nabzeska said there were some mental errors in need of a fix, such as the offense ahead of the pitch and players not sliding into a base. But the Cougars did not play down to Monte Vista’s level, and they cruised to a 12-run victory as a result.

Christopher is scheduled to host Monterey on Thursday at 4 p.m.
