The Gavilan College softball team opened the 2012 season hosting a doubleheader Saturday. The Rams split the day’s action, first defeating Porterville College 3-2 before falling in the nightcap, 4-1, to De Anza College.

Gavilan played from behind for the majority of Game 1 after Porterville went up 2-0 in the first inning. The Rams tied it in the sixth. Elaina Vasquez led off the frame with a single and later scored on an error. Shayna Osuna drove in Pricilla Orona, who reached with a single, to make it 2-2. Osuna was also responsible for the game winner – a base hit chasing Danielle Vallejo across in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Osuna finished the game with three singles and the two RBIs. Vallejo also had three singles, Hailey Nelson had a double. The Rams totaled 12 hits in the game. Pitcher Jenny Barboa was credited with the win, striking out nine.

A three-run fourth inning, which broke a 1-1 deadlock, moved De Anza ahead 4-1 – the eventual final – in Game 2. The Dons earned their runs with just three hits, while the Rams belted 10 hits but left eight runners on base.

Nelson went 2-for-4, and, with one of her three hits in the game, Adrianna Osuna delivered the lone RBI in the third.
