GILROY – With the postponement of today’s baseball game between Gilroy and San Benito, Wednesday in Hollister – weather permitting – is shaping up to be quite a day.
Not only are the baseball teams scheduled to play game one of two this week, the softball squads from both schools are pitted against each other in a key Tri-County Athletic League game at 4:30 p.m.
There is a log jam at the top of the TCAL standings, clogged by the Lady Mustangs (10-5, 4-1), the Lady Balers (14-2, 4-0) and the Notre Dame Spirits (16-3, 4-1).
A win by Gilroy would only thicken the soup at the top of the leaderboard and make the second half of league play all the more interesting. If San Benito, four-time defending Central Coast Section champion, prevails, they would hold a two-game lead over the Lady Mustangs.
Gilroy fields a young yet tenacious team, glued together by lone senior Alissa Castro, and motored by the likes of Dani Hemeon, Melanie Morelos, Casey Lester and Sarah Lira – only to name a few from a team that receives contribution from its players up and down the bench for manager Julie Berggren.
The Lady Mustangs were 0-3 against their rivals last season, including a 4-3 loss in the CCS Division I finals.
The Lady Balers are off to another stellar start to the season, setting up what appears to be a well-matched throwdown between two softball heavyweights.
