Do you go with an artificial or with a live tree? Chopping down your own Christmas tree can be the perfect way to start the season.

“People have already been coming out wanting to reserve trees,” said John Bourdet, who has a Christmas tree farm outside of Hollister that opens officially Nov. 26. “Some people like them big or tall and some like them fat.”

Shopping for a tree can be an experience for the whole family. Farms like Bourdet’s and the San Martin Christmas Tree Farm offer additional activities like hayrides and visits with Santa.

Most of the Christmas tree farms in the area provide the equipment needed to cut the trees down. Now it just comes down to picking a tree that is right for your house.

“The biggest thing is to get a straight stump,” Bourdet said. “But after that, its just a matter of preference. Everyone has a different taste in trees.”
