Mustangs join fight against breast cancer

Gilroy High School has joined the fight against and its calling on Mustangs fans to get involved, too. 

Third quarter woes stymie Gilroy in season opener

The Gilroy boys basketball team put up a fight against North Monterey County, but a third quarter barrage sank the Mustangs’ hopes in their season opener at the Alvarez Tournament.

It wasn't exactly the start that the Christopher girls tennis team was looking for. The Cougars lost six of the seven matches at Pajaro Valley Thursday. Emily Barham was the lone victor, winning in two sets 6-4, 6-4. The doubles pair of Sara Blawski and Minna Wu kept their match close, before ultimately falling in to sets 7-5, 6-4. The Cougars were playing without the services of two of their normal varsity starters, but coach Patrick McBrearty said that it was a taste of what some of his JV players could expect from the next level. "The good thing is it gave some of the other CHS players a chance to get into the competition," he said. "Hopefully we can field a full team against Gilroy." Christopher will be back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday to host Gilroy.  VOLLEYBALL Gilroy loses in three to Alvarez Gilroy dropped it's league opener 3-0 Thursday at Everette Alvarez. The Mustangs lost 19-25, 16-25, 21-25 and were led offensively by Leilani Mah. On defense, Gilroy was highlighted by Bailie Erickson.  The loss drops Gilroy to an overall 1-4 record and 0-1 in the Monterey Bay League Pacific Division. The JV squad also lost its contest in two sets 4-25, 10-25. JV standouts were Desiree Cundiff and Evelyn Clonts.  Gilroy will be back on the court at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to take on Monte Vista Christian.  GIRLS GOLF Christopher tops Trinity Christian, Watsonville The Christopher girls golf team stayed perfect on the season, topping Trinity Christian 245-268 and Watsonville 245-310 at Monterey Pines Thursday to improve to 5-0 on the year. 

BASKETBALL: Cougars beat Wildcatz, rematch set with MVC for tournament title

Top-seeded Christopher High defeated Watsonville 40-26 in the semifinals of the Monterey Bay League girls basketball postseason tournament on Thursday night, setting up a rubber match with Monte Vista Christian for the tournament title.

BASEBALL: Six Mustangs presented year-end league honors

Senior Bubu Garcia was voted the Gilroy High baseball team’s lone Tri-County Athletic League first-team representative - the third straight such distinction for the shortstop. In addition to Garcia, five other Mustangs received year-end accolades.

VOLLEYBALL: Gilroy downs Salinas in three sets

The Gilroy High boys volleyball team swept past host Salinas 25-13, 25-18, 25-16 on Thursday night for its third Tri-County Athletic League Valley Division victory via straight sets, in as many matches.

The Gilroy field hockey team started its season off on the right foot, going undefeated at the Varsity Jamboree tournament Saturday at Saratoga. Morgan Rogars was one of the top scorers for the Mustangs, who topped Los Altos 4-0, Saratoga 1-0 and tied with Archbishop Mitty 1-1. Coach Adam Gemar also noted Cathy Carbajal and Carli Colyer as standouts from the tournament.  Gilroy (2-0-1) will host North Salinas at 3:30 p.m. Thursday before playing in the Leigh Roundup tournament Friday and Saturday.

THURSDAY ROUNDUP: CHS girls track finishes dual season 6-0

The Christopher High girls varsity track and field team completed a 6-0 Monterey Bay regular season record after victories over Seaside (94-32) and Monte Vista Christian (103-19) on Thursday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Prep Football: Alexander-Jones inks with Minot State University

GILROY—Darius Alexander-Jones II received a special going away present before his signing day event.
