Athletes of the Week: Dec. 26

Each week we will recognize one area male and female athlete for their performances. This week's are: 

Wrestling: Carmona, Nebesnick lead locals at girls CIF state meet

Christopher High’s Maraya Carmona and Gilroy High’s Megan Nebesnick each reached the championship quarterfinals of the girls wrestling California Interscholastic Federation state meet Saturday at Lemoore High.

Hoops: Rocheleau, CHS boys top Alvarez, 52-47

Wyatt Rocheleau scored 18 points to lead Christopher's boys basketball team to a 52-47 win over Alvarez on Friday night.

Prep Basketball: Fourth quarter propels Gilroy into championship of Hagen Tourney with 41-38 win over Live Oak

Wrestling: Olmos pins award, leads four GHS champs at Overfelt Classic

Gilroy High wrestler Victor Olmos won the 130-pound title on his way to Most Outstanding Wrestler honors among lowerweights to lead the Mustangs to a second-place team finish in the 49th Overfelt Classic on Saturday in San Jose.

WATER POLO: GHS boys rebound for win against Alvarez

The Gilroy High boys water polo team dealt with a loss Tuesday to Stevenson in the best possible way, returning to the pool two days later and recording a win.The Mustangs used a quick start, built a five-goal lead by the half and rolled  to a 14-5 victory over Alvarez on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs unable to cool off Anzar

Not much has slowed, let alone stopped, a rolling Anzar High volleyball team through its first nine matches. Gilroy High had it as its objective to halt the surging Hawks, winners of five straight, in a nonleague contest Wednesday night in Gilroy.
